Information

This rare ceiling lamp was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland. Executed in brass with a glass diffuser, the lamp reflects the restrained yet highly refined approach that characterizes Tynell’s lighting designs, where proportion, surface treatment, and controlled light output are central elements. The silhouette is defined by a gently tapered conical shade and a long, slender stem, creating a balanced vertical profile suitable for both residential and architectural interiors.

The shade is formed in brass with a warm golden tone and is perforated with a dispersed pattern of small openings. When illuminated, these perforations create a subtle constellation-like effect, introducing decorative points of light while maintaining an overall soft downward illumination. The underside is fitted with a glass diffuser that supports an even light distribution and reduces glare, giving the lamp a functional, technically considered light quality in addition to its sculptural presence.

Paavo Tynell is regarded as one of the most significant Nordic lighting designers of the 20th century, known for combining delicate decorative detailing with modernist clarity. His work for Finnish manufacturers such as Taito Oy contributed to the development of high-quality lighting during the mid-century period, often incorporating brass components and perforated elements that allow light to interact with the surroundings in a controlled and atmospheric manner.

The lamp is in good vintage condition, showing visible signs of age and use. The brass surfaces display patina and wear consistent with long-term handling and exposure, contributing to an authentic material character typical for original examples from the period.

Dimensions: diameter 36 cm (14.17 in) and height 101 cm (39.76 in).
