Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model 9029/4, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. The model belongs to Tynell’s most poetic period, where functional lighting design is combined with an organic, almost sculptural expression. The lamp exemplifies the softer side of Nordic modernism, drawing inspiration from nature while maintaining a refined architectural balance.
The construction is executed in brass with four glass shades arranged in a floral composition around a central stem. The brass framework is richly detailed with delicate leaf and stem elements, a hallmark of Tynell’s work, lending the lamp a light, decorative character despite its substantial presence. The warm-toned glass shades diffuse the light gently, creating an atmospheric and intimate illumination that highlights both the material qualities and the craftsmanship of the piece.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use, including patina to the brass surfaces. Some of the original brass leaf elements show damage and have been replaced, and the glass shades are later replacements made after the original models. These restorations are consistent with long-term use and do not detract from the overall visual integrity or functionality of the lamp, while the natural patina contributes to its historical character.
The lamp measures approximately 55 cm in diameter and 75 cm in height, corresponding to about 21.7 inches in diameter and 29.5 inches in height. With its sculptural form, warm materials, and strong designer provenance, this ceiling lamp represents a highly desirable example of mid-century Finnish lighting design by one of its most influential figures.
