Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This very rare ceiling lamp, model 9029/4, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. The model belongs to Tynell’s botanical series of luminaires, where organic references and finely worked metal details were combined with carefully shaped glass to create atmospheric yet technically refined lighting objects.
The lamp is constructed from brass and glass, suspended from a slender vertical brass rod terminating in a conical ceiling canopy. The central body supports four softly rounded glass shades arranged in a radial composition. The glass is warm-toned and slightly opaque, producing a gentle, diffused light. Surrounding the shades is an intricate arrangement of delicate brass elements formed as leaves, stems, and small floral motifs, some executed in fine mesh. These details introduce a layered, sculptural quality while remaining light and transparent in character. The brass has developed a rich golden patina, accentuating the hand-worked nature of the components.
Paavo Tynell is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Finnish lighting design of the 20th century. His work is distinguished by an exceptional sensitivity to light, material, and atmosphere, often incorporating natural motifs rendered through technically advanced metalwork. During the 1930s and 1940s, Tynell developed a series of decorative yet highly functional luminaires that bridged classicism and early modernism. Model 9029/4 exemplifies this approach, combining floral ornamentation with a disciplined structural layout.
Taito Oy was Finland’s leading lighting manufacturer during the mid-20th century and maintained a close collaboration with Tynell for several decades. The company was known for high production standards, precise metalworking, and the ability to realize complex designs that required both technical skill and artisanal execution. Lamps from Taito Oy are today considered key references within Scandinavian lighting history.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, showing small signs of usage and age-related patina consistent with its period. The brass surfaces retain their original finish, with minor surface wear that contributes to the overall authenticity. The glass shades are well preserved, and the lamp is structurally sound and fully functional.
The dimensions are approximately 50 cm in diameter and 100 cm in total height, corresponding to about 19.7 inches in diameter and 39.4 inches in height. The proportions and vertical emphasis make this lamp suitable as a central ceiling fixture, where its sculptural form and warm light can be fully appreciated.
