Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This very rare ceiling lamp, model 9011, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. The model represents a mature phase of Tynell’s work, where decorative refinement, technical clarity, and atmospheric lighting are combined in a highly sculptural yet restrained composition. The lamp reflects the transition from late Art Deco influences toward a softer Nordic modern expression characteristic of the period.
The structure is executed in brass with a warm, naturally aged surface showing an even patina throughout. The lamp features six elegantly curved arms arranged symmetrically around a central vertical element. Each arm supports an elongated glass shade in a softly yellowed opaline tone, tapering slightly toward the base. The glass diffuses the light gently, creating a warm and even illumination. The central body is accentuated by a tightly wound brass coil and a distinctive clustered lower termination formed by several rounded brass elements, adding visual weight and balance to the composition.
The suspension is defined by a slender brass stem and a stepped ceiling canopy, both finished to match the rest of the structure. Visible textile-covered wiring contributes to the overall historical character and reflects original production methods. When illuminated, the lamp produces a calm, enveloping light that highlights the curvature of the brass arms and the translucency of the glass shades, making it well suited for dining rooms or larger living spaces.
Paavo Tynell is regarded as one of the most important lighting designers of the 20th century in the Nordic region. As artistic director and co-founder of Taito Oy, he played a central role in shaping Finnish lighting design. His work is known for its sensitivity to material, form, and light quality, often combining handcrafted details with advanced production techniques. Model 9011 is a strong example of this approach, demonstrating both technical sophistication and sculptural presence.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with signs of usage consistent with age. The brass surfaces show patina and minor wear, while the glass shades are well preserved. These traces of age enhance the authenticity of the piece without compromising its functionality or visual integrity.
