Information

This rare ceiling lamp, model 9029/4, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland. It is a sophisticated example of Tynell’s signature design language, characterized by the integration of organic motifs and finely executed metalwork into functional lighting. The lamp reflects Tynell’s mid-century vision, where lighting not only served a utilitarian purpose but also functioned as a sculptural and decorative element within a space.

The structure is composed of brass and opaline glass, forming a balanced composition that unites warm metallic tones with softly diffusing surfaces. Four opaline glass shades, shaped like elongated petals or buds, are arranged in a symmetrical pattern, suspended from delicately curved brass arms. These arms are further adorned with detailed floral and foliate decorations—small blossoms and leaves executed with a high degree of craftsmanship. The interplay between the floral brass work and the gently glowing glass shades creates a refined visual rhythm that evokes natural growth and movement.

The opaline glass shades emit a warm, even illumination, their creamy tone diffusing the light in a way that is both atmospheric and functional. The brass has aged gracefully, maintaining its original patina and golden hue, which enhances the lamp’s vintage appeal without obscuring its intricate surface detailing.

The condition of the lamp is excellent. The brass components remain structurally sound and richly toned, showing only light patina consistent with age. The opaline glass shades are in pristine condition, free from chips, cracks, or discoloration. The overall form remains crisp and intact, underscoring the enduring quality of both its materials and construction.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a pivotal figure in the development of Finnish lighting design and one of the founding designers at Taito Oy. Known for his lyrical interpretations of nature, Tynell’s work often featured brass and glass components, perforations, and botanical references. Model 9029/4 exemplifies his ability to elevate everyday lighting into the realm of art and craftsmanship. The collaboration between Tynell and Taito Oy produced many of Finland’s most iconic lighting designs, which remain highly sought after by collectors and design historians alike.

The lamp measures 50 cm in diameter and 113 cm in height. In inches, this is approximately 19.7 inches in diameter and 44.5 inches in height.
