Information

This ceiling lamp is Paavo Tynell’s model 9050, often referred to as the United Nations lamp, produced by Taito Oy in Finland around 1950. The design is defined by a large, shallow bowl-shaped shade in brass, suspended from a brass ceiling canopy by a characteristic open frame suspension that forms an elegant triangular profile. The overall expression is architectural and well-balanced, with a wide horizontal spread and a clearly articulated central construction beneath the shade.

The brass shade is finely perforated with a constellation-like pattern of small holes distributed across the surface. When illuminated, these perforations create a distinct starry light effect, adding a secondary decorative function while also softening the overall lighting impression. Beneath the center, the lamp features a layered ring detail in brass surrounding a circular glass diffuser, which helps to control glare and distribute the light more evenly downward.

Paavo Tynell is regarded as one of the most important figures in Finnish lighting design of the mid-century era, known for combining precise metalwork with a poetic approach to light and surface. His work frequently incorporates perforations, brass detailing, and carefully engineered diffusers to create warm and atmospheric illumination, and model 9050 is a strong example of this approach. The lamp was produced by Taito Oy, the Finnish manufacturer closely associated with Tynell’s most celebrated designs, and recognized for high-quality production and refined finishing.

The lamp is made in brass and glass, with a warm golden tone that develops naturally over time. It is in good vintage condition with small signs of use consistent with age, including minor surface wear and patina to the brass. The lamp measures 55 cm in diameter and 55 cm in height (approximately 21.7 inches in diameter and 21.7 inches in height).
