Information

This rare pair of ceiling lamps, model K2-20, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. The lamps combine brass and opaline glass, creating a design that marries functional Scandinavian modern aesthetics with the delicate detailing characteristic of Tynell’s work. The shades are made of perforated brass, with a scalloped edge that enhances the refined yet industrial quality of the design. The opaline glass diffuser ensures soft, even light distribution, while the brass wire ornament at the top of the lamp adds an elegant touch, a signature element often seen in Tynell’s designs.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a renowned Finnish designer and lighting innovator, famous for his ability to merge metalwork with organic forms. Tynell co-founded Taito Oy in 1918 and later collaborated extensively with Idman, producing some of the most iconic lighting fixtures of the mid-century period. His work is celebrated for its craftsmanship, decorative perforations, and sculptural, yet lightweight forms, which have earned him a significant place in the history of Scandinavian design.

Idman was a Finnish lighting manufacturer that played a key role in shaping Scandinavian lighting design during the 20th century. The company was known for producing high-quality fixtures, often collaborating with leading designers such as Tynell. Idman’s lighting pieces emphasized both functionality and artistic expression, reflecting the values of mid-century modern design in Finland.

This lamp is a prime example of Scandinavian modern style, which emphasizes simplicity, natural materials, and a balanced focus on form and function. The design is both elegant and functional, creating a beautiful balance between craftsmanship and modern aesthetics.

The dimensions of the lamp are 37 cm in diameter (14.6 inches) and 33 cm in height (13 inches). The lamp remains in good vintage condition, with natural patina on the brass, consistent with age and use, adding to the authenticity and character of the piece.
