Paavo Tynell ceiling lamps
This is a ceiling lamp or flush mount, model 2083, designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. The fixture exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian lighting design, characterized by its refined materiality and diffused ambient light.
The lamp features a circular base of white-lacquered metal with a cylindrical opaline glass diffuser, which emits a soft and even glow. Attached to the lower portion of the glass diffuser is a conical woven shade constructed from thin wooden slats, interlaced with natural cord in a radial pattern. This creates a warm, tactile surface and contributes to the lamp’s naturalistic expression. The woven structure permits light to filter through the slats, casting a patterned glow while directing most of the light downward.
The color palette consists of matte white for the metal and translucent opaline for the glass, complemented by honey-toned wood in the shade. This combination lends a sense of balance between industrial and natural materials, a hallmark of Tynell’s work. The structural frame is supported internally with fine metal rods for rigidity, while the wooden shade remains light and open in construction.
Condition is very good, with only minor wear visible on the mounting plate and consistent patina on the internal metal elements. The wooden shade is intact and free from warping or breakage, and the opaline glass retains its satin finish. The lamp remains structurally sound and electrically functional.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of the foremost Finnish lighting designers of the 20th century. His work is renowned for its elegance, craftsmanship, and blend of artisanal and industrial techniques. Taito Oy, the company he co-founded, played a pivotal role in Finnish lighting production in the postwar decades. Tynell’s lamps are known for their innovative use of perforated brass, organic motifs, and attention to diffused light. The 2083 model departs slightly from his more decorative metalwork, embracing a rustic modernity through the integration of wood.
The lamp measures 43.5 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 17.13 inches by 11.81 inches.
