Information

This rare ceiling lamp, model 1995, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. Constructed from brass with a white lacquered interior, the lamp exemplifies Tynell’s signature method of creating soft, ambient lighting through the use of perforation and indirect illumination.

The fixture features a gently flared conical form with an untreated brass exterior exhibiting natural patina and oxidation consistent with its age. A distinctive pattern of precisely punched perforations decorates the lower half of the shade, forming arrow-like motifs. When illuminated, these perforations cast subtle star-like patterns, diffusing light outward while directing the main illumination downward. The white lacquered interior enhances the diffusion of light, contributing to the lamp’s warm and even glow.

This piece reflects Tynell’s core philosophy of combining craftsmanship with functionality. Trained as a metalworker, Tynell (1890–1973) was a pivotal figure in 20th-century Scandinavian lighting design, known for his collaborations with architects and his work with both Taito Oy and Idman. He frequently utilized brass, glass, and perforated metal to produce lighting that offered both decorative appeal and practical warmth in public and private spaces.

Idman Oy, based in Helsinki, was a principal manufacturer of Tynell’s postwar designs, helping to bring his distinctive style to a broad architectural audience during the mid-century, especially in institutional and commercial interiors across Finland.

The lamp is in good vintage condition, displaying visible patina and surface marks on the brass. It has been rewired and is ready for modern installation.

Dimensions measure 19.5 cm in diameter and 28 cm in height (approximately 7.7 by 11 inches), with a total hanging length of about 63 cm (24.8 inches).
