Information

This rare ceiling lamp, model 9067, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. As with much of Tynell’s work from this period, the lamp demonstrates his masterful ability to merge industrial design with lyrical, handcrafted detail. Intended as a flush mount or semi-flush ceiling fixture, model 9067 is both functional and refined, embodying the understated elegance of early Scandinavian modernism.

The lamp is constructed from a combination of warm-toned brass and crisp white lacquered metal. The primary form is a cylindrical body that subtly tapers toward the top, a silhouette that adds vertical interest without overwhelming its surroundings. A perforated ring encircles the lower portion of the lacquered section, a design element frequently found in Tynell’s work. These small perforations serve a dual purpose: they allow light to gently filter through the body of the lamp, creating a soft halo effect, and they contribute a decorative rhythm to the otherwise minimal shape.

The brass detailing includes a circular ceiling mount and a small cylindrical finial or cap at the bottom, framing the lamp vertically and offering warm contrast to the white enamel surface. The brass has aged gracefully, developing a natural patina that softens its reflective quality and enriches the overall appearance with a vintage authenticity. The lacquered metal displays minor surface wear and light scratches, appropriate for a piece of its age, but remains clean and well-preserved, with no structural damage.

Measuring 16 cm in diameter and 32 cm in height (approximately 6.3 × 12.6 inches), the fixture is compact yet striking. Its modest scale makes it ideal for use in smaller rooms, hallways, entryways, or grouped in multiples across a larger ceiling space.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a pioneer of Finnish lighting design and co-founder of Taito Oy, the premier lighting manufacturer in Finland during the early to mid-20th century. Tynell’s work is distinguished by its delicate balance of modernist forms, hand-crafted brass detailing, and light-modulating techniques such as perforated metalwork. His designs were often described as “poetry in light” and he remains one of the most sought-after names in vintage Nordic design today.

Taito Oy, active from the 1910s through the 1950s, produced many of Tynell’s most iconic fixtures, characterized by high-quality materials and a meticulous approach to fabrication. Model 9067 is a rare and authentic example from this important design partnership.

The lamp remains in very good vintage condition and is a compelling representation of Tynell’s early lighting innovations. With its clean architectural form, elegant brass accents, and soft, ambient light quality, it serves as both a functional lighting object and a collectible piece of Nordic design history.
