Information

This pair of wall lamps, model 9447, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. The construction combines brass and glass in a compact, refined form typical of Tynell’s early post-war lighting. The brass arm curves upward from a circular wall mount, supporting a tulip-shaped brass cup that holds the glass shade. The glass is softly opaline with a warm, cream-toned translucency, allowing a diffuse and even light when illuminated. The shade’s rounded contour contributes to a gentle silhouette that contrasts with the more structured metal elements.

The brass components show a naturally aged surface with patina, visible in both the wall plate and the curved stem. This surface character is consistent with original 1940s production and aligns with Tynell’s use of warm metals and subtle detailing. The underside of the brass mount is stamped, marking the model number 9447 and the TAITO imprint, reflecting the manufacturer’s high-quality craftsmanship and the precision of Finnish lighting production of that period.

Paavo Tynell was a central figure in Finnish mid-century design. His work combined functional simplicity with elegant decorative elements, and he frequently employed brass as a primary material due to its natural warmth and adaptability. During the 1940s, pieces produced by Taito Oy—where Tynell was both designer and co-founder—exhibited a restrained yet distinct modernism. Model 9447 is an example of this period, displaying a minimal composition elevated by careful proportions and material quality.

The lamps are in good vintage condition with small signs of usage. The brass surfaces show expected wear, minor marks, and patina, while the glass shades are clean and retain their original opaline finish. These signs of age are consistent with authentic mid-century fixtures and do not affect structural integrity or function.

Dimensions are 12 cm in width, 17 cm in depth, and 31 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 4.7 inches by 6.7 inches by 12.2 inches.
