Paavo Tynell wall lamp
Very rare adjustable wall lamp designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. The lamp is an exceptional example of Tynell’s refined approach to lighting design, combining delicate brass construction with natural materials and an elegant architectural silhouette. Its airy proportions and understated detailing embody the warmth and sophistication associated with Finnish mid-century modernism.
The lamp features a slender brass wall-mounted arm with an adjustable telescopic construction allowing the depth to extend from 70 to 95 cm. The conical shade is executed in woven wood veneer, creating a soft and atmospheric diffusion of light while casting intricate linear shadows when illuminated. The shade can also be tilted, adding both functional flexibility and sculptural presence. The warm brass patina paired with the organic texture of the wooden shade creates a harmonious balance between industrial precision and handcrafted character.
Paavo Tynell’s lighting designs are celebrated for their poetic interaction with light, and this model is particularly notable for the atmospheric glow and dramatic shadow play created by the woven shade structure. The lamp works equally well as functional lighting and as a highly decorative wall-mounted statement piece.
