Paavo Tynell wall lamps
This very rare pair of wall lamps, model 9460, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. The lamps are crafted in solid brass, featuring Tynell’s signature combination of elegance and functional sophistication. The shades are formed as horizontally oriented, slightly curved brass panels with fine perforations distributed across the surface. These perforations create a delicate, star-like pattern of light when the lamps are illuminated, casting a soft, decorative glow onto the surrounding wall.
The design is restrained yet full of character, with a form that balances the flatness of the panel with the gentle curvature at its ends. The brass surface has aged gracefully, showing a warm patina that gives the lamps depth and a rich, authentic finish. The wall mount and inner fittings are similarly executed in brass, maintaining visual consistency throughout the design.
Paavo Tynell, often referred to as “the man who illuminated Finland” was one of the most important lighting designers of the 20th century and a pioneer of Scandinavian modern lighting. His works are celebrated for their lightness, use of perforated metal, and ability to combine craft with industrial production. Model 9460 reflects Tynell’s philosophy of creating lamps that are not only sources of illumination but also sculptural objects that interact with their environment.
These lamps are in excellent vintage condition with minor surface marks and patina consistent with age. They remain fully functional and exemplify the timeless quality of Tynell’s work, making them highly sought-after pieces for collectors of mid-century Scandinavian design.
