Information

This very rare multifunctional bench was designed by Brazilian designer Percival Lafer and produced by Lafer MP in Brazil during the 1960s. It exemplifies Brazilian mid-century modernism through its innovative fusion of seating, table, and magazine storage, unified in a sculptural and functional form. The piece highlights the inventive use of materials and structure that characterize Lafer’s design language.

The bench features a tubular chrome-plated steel frame that creates a geometric and structurally expressive base. The frame includes angular supports and cross-stretchers that provide stability and a visually light construction. The seating and table surfaces are framed in solid rosewood, exhibiting rich tonal depth with dark brown and reddish hues, along with the linear grain typical of Brazilian hardwoods. The seat and backrest incorporate brown suede leather slings, which are complemented by removable cowhide cushions displaying natural irregular patterns in tan, brown, and white. This combination introduces a distinctive organic texture and warmth to the piece. Suspended suede magazine holders are integrated on either side of the bench, stitched and supported by dowelled wooden rods, further enhancing the multifunctionality.

Percival Lafer, both an industrial designer and architect, is recognized for merging Brazilian vernacular materials with international modernist aesthetics. His designs often employ leather, tropical hardwoods, and metal frameworks, emphasizing ergonomic comfort and modular versatility. This piece reflects Lafer’s focus on combining functionality with bold, sculptural forms.

Lafer MP, the manufacturing company founded by Lafer, aimed to make high-quality and innovative designs accessible, and this bench represents a peak in the company’s exploration of transparency, structural innovation, and mixed materials. The interplay of chrome, rosewood, leather, and cowhide demonstrates Lafer’s tactile sensitivity and material-focused design approach.

The bench measures 150 cm in width, 67 cm in depth, and 68 cm in height, with a seat height of 38 cm, corresponding approximately to 59.1 inches wide, 26.4 inches deep, 26.8 inches high, and 15 inches seat height. The condition is very good, exhibiting light patina and minor wear on the leather and metal consistent with age and use. The cowhide cushions maintain their natural luster, and the structural components remain stable and intact.
