Poul Hundevad coffee table
This rare coffee table, model Guldhøj, was designed by Poul Hundevad and produced in Vamdrup, Denmark. Named after the Guldhøj burial mound in southern Jutland, from which the design draws inspiration, the table is an embodiment of Danish mid-century design that fuses functional simplicity with sculptural expression.
The table features a round glass top with a subtly green-tinted edge, characteristic of mid-century float glass. The glass is clear, offering an unobstructed view of the architectonic base while lending the piece an airy and minimal presence. Its transparency contrasts elegantly with the richly toned teak base, reinforcing the visual lightness of the design while ensuring stability and practicality.
The base is crafted from solid teak and comprises two intersecting frames that slot together to form an X-shaped support. The design is both geometric and organic, with rounded edges and softly tapering profiles that highlight the natural grain and warmth of the teak. A leather strap connects the two lower points of the base, stabilizing the construction while introducing a tactile contrast in both texture and color. The leather is fitted with precise attention to proportion, typical of Hundevad’s exacting standards.
The craftsmanship is consistent with Hundevad’s work, known for its clarity of form, refined joinery, and understated elegance. The balance between the circular top and the crisscrossing base results in a dynamic yet cohesive composition, suitable for a wide range of interior environments.
The table is in excellent condition. The teak base retains its original finish, showing no signs of structural wear or notable surface damage. The leather strap is intact and firm, with minimal aging. The glass top is pristine—free from scratches, chips, or clouding—preserving the clarity and sharpness of the table’s profile.
Poul Hundevad (1917–2011) was a Danish furniture maker and designer whose work emphasized quality materials and modular construction. His designs often reflect influences from ancient Scandinavian furniture forms, interpreted through the lens of modernist minimalism. The Guldhøj model is among his most iconic and innovative creations, offering both historical reference and modern design sensibility.
The table measures 75 cm in diameter and 41 cm in height. In inches, this equates to approximately 29.5 inches in diameter and 16.1 inches in height.
