Preben Fabricius & Jørgen Kastholm easy chair
This rare easy chair was designed by the Danish duo Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm and produced by cabinetmaker Poul Bachmann in Denmark. The chair is a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian modernism, combining traditional craftsmanship with a focus on material honesty and functional elegance.
Constructed from solid oak, the frame presents a warm, golden tone that has developed a rich patina over time. The structure is angular yet balanced, with a gently reclined stance that enhances the chair’s ergonomic comfort. The backrest is adjustable, supported by leather straps affixed with brass hardware, which introduces both a visual contrast and mechanical functionality. These elements reflect the designers’ interest in merging form and engineering, while the use of brass and leather adds a tactile and material richness to the composition.
The seat and backrest are made of tightly stretched canvas, providing a breathable and resilient surface. The canvas has a natural tone, creating a harmonious palette alongside the oak frame and the tan leather details. The leather elements, used in the support and strap system, are both functional and decorative, contributing to the chair’s subtle industrial character.
The condition of the chair is very good. The oak frame is structurally intact and retains its original finish with only minor signs of use. The canvas remains taut and clean, with slight aging consistent with its vintage origin. The leather straps are supple and well-preserved, and the brass fittings exhibit a gentle aged luster, underscoring the piece’s authenticity.
Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm collaborated throughout the 1960s, producing a small but significant body of work characterized by precision, material integrity, and a modernist ethos. Their partnership combined Fabricius’ background in cabinetry with Kastholm’s training in architecture, resulting in furniture that balances comfort, aesthetics, and construction. Pieces made by Poul Bachmann are considered rare, often crafted in limited quantities with high artisanal standards.
The chair measures 74 cm in height, 100 cm in width, 82 cm in depth, and has a seat height of 36 cm. In inches, these dimensions convert to approximately 29.1 inches high, 39.4 inches wide, 32.3 inches deep, with a seat height of 14.2 inches.
