Preben Fabricius & Jørgen Kastholm easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs was designed by the celebrated Danish duo Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm, and produced by the skilled cabinetmaker Poul Bachmann in Denmark in 1966. The model was originally showcased at The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark in 1963, highlighting the designers’ dedication to craftsmanship and innovative construction techniques.
Each chair features a robust oak frame with meticulous joinery, ensuring both strength and elegance. The angular form supports a reclining posture, enhanced by a durable canvas seat complemented with a quilted natural-colored cushion for extra comfort. The canvas is secured using brass fittings and adjustable leather straps, which not only serve a practical purpose but also enrich the visual texture. The interplay of warm oak, aged leather, and patinated brass creates a natural, organic aesthetic with refined material contrast.
Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm were known for their focus on ergonomic design, honesty of materials, and structural clarity. Their partnership produced iconic furniture that merges modernist ideals with the rich heritage of Danish woodworking, resulting in enduring and collectible designs.
Each chair measures 74 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 66 cm in height (29.1 x 31.5 x 26 inches), with a seat height of 32 cm (12.6 inches). The chairs are well-preserved, featuring a natural patina on both oak and leather, minor wear consistent with age, and intact original canvas and brass hardware. They stand as significant exemplars of mid-century Danish modernist furniture design.
