Preben Fabricius & Jørgen Kastholm Scimitar chair
This rare easy chair, model Scimitar, was designed by Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm and produced by Ivan Schlechter in Denmark in 1962. The chair features a sculptural steel frame combined with its original black leather upholstery, creating a striking contrast between industrial precision and organic material warmth. The model’s name, “Scimitar,” refers to the crescent-shaped steel base, which mirrors the elegant curvature of a sword blade and defines the chair’s distinctive silhouette.
The seat shell is formed from molded fiberglass, upholstered in smooth black leather that has aged gracefully, showing fine surface wear and minor dry cracks consistent with use. The deep, curved seat and low profile express Fabricius and Kastholm’s pursuit of both comfort and minimalism, offering a perfect balance between function and form. The design embodies the duo’s architectural sensibility, where line and material merge seamlessly into a unified whole.
Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm, both trained as cabinetmakers and architects, were among the leading figures of Danish modernism during the 1960s. Their collaborative works—often produced by Ivan Schlechter and later by Kill International—are known for their uncompromising craftsmanship, refined detailing, and use of luxurious materials such as steel, leather, and glass. The Scimitar chair represents one of their earliest and most technically sophisticated designs, foreshadowing later icons like the FK87 Grasshopper and the Bird chair.
This example remains in good vintage condition, with visible patina and minor wear to the leather that enhances its authenticity. The steel structure is solid and retains its original brushed finish, showing only small marks consistent with age.
