Preben Fabricius & Jørgen Kastholm easy chair
This rare easy chair, model Scimitar, was designed by Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm in 1962 and produced by Ivan Schlechter in Denmark. The chair features a sculptural, curved seat shell upholstered in its original patinated saddle leather, resting atop a distinctive semi-circular base crafted from cast steel. The base, inspired by the shape of a scimitar blade, lends the chair its name and provides structural support with minimal visual mass, creating a floating appearance and a balanced, elegant form.
The leather upholstery is a warm cognac brown, exhibiting signs of use such as natural patina and minor surface cracking consistent with age. The steel frame remains in good condition, with only light wear visible on the finish. The saddle leather is carefully stitched and contoured into three sections for the seat, back, and lower support, molded to follow the ergonomic curvature of the shell.
Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm were notable for their modernist furniture designs in the 1960s, often combining sculptural minimalism with industrial materials. Their collaboration yielded a series of iconic and highly collectible pieces, with the Scimitar chair recognized as one of the rarest. The design reflects their dedication to elegance through reduction, precise engineering, and functional clarity.
Ivan Schlechter, a specialized Danish manufacturer, was known for producing limited-edition and technically advanced furniture, making this chair notable both for its design significance and its craftsmanship.
The dimensions are 82 cm wide, 60 cm deep, and 65.5 cm high, with a seat height of 33 cm, approximately 32.3 x 23.6 x 25.8 inches, and a seat height of 13 inches.
