Stool
This rare low stool of unknown design origin was produced in Sweden during the 1950s. Crafted entirely from solid teak, the stool exemplifies the understated yet materially expressive qualities typical of Scandinavian mid-century craftsmanship.
The stool features a thick, circular seat measuring 40 cm in diameter (15.7 inches), supported by four evenly spaced cylindrical legs that create a grounded, symmetrical form. The seat’s edges are carefully rounded with smooth transitions, reflecting a high level of hand-finishing. A rectangular cut-out grip is centered on the seat, providing both a functional handle for ease of movement and a visual element that breaks the seat’s surface.
On the top surface, four large joinery plugs made from darker teak are exposed and arranged equidistantly in a square pattern. These plugs serve dual purposes as structural reinforcements and decorative details, drawing on traditional Scandinavian woodworking techniques. The visible end grain and subtle variations in wood tone and pattern highlight the quality of the material and the careful orientation of its grain.
The teak has developed a warm medium-brown tone with a rich natural oil finish, exhibiting a smooth luster. The surface shows minimal signs of wear, consistent with its age, while maintaining excellent structural integrity. With a low profile height of 17 cm (6.7 inches), the stool is suitable for use as a step stool, display platform, or versatile low seat within various interior contexts.
This piece stands as an example of anonymous Scandinavian modernism, where functional design, material honesty, and precise woodworking unite to create a modest yet enduring object.
