Hans Bergström ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp is a rare example of Hans Bergström’s work for ASEA during the 1950s, a period when Scandinavian lighting design was shifting toward a softer, more organic modernism. The fixture is composed of three gracefully curved arms in patinated brass that meet in a central spherical hub, forming a balanced and symmetrical composition. Each arm supports a white opal glass shade with a gently tapered, bulbous form, giving the lamp a sculptural quality. The shades are mounted on brass holders with a decorative perforated cross motif that allows light to pass through, adding a subtle ornamental detail and a warm glow when lit.
The materials are characteristic of Bergström’s design language, combining the warm tone of aged brass with the diffuse, soft light of satin-finished opal glass. The patina on the brass has developed evenly over time, showing minor surface marks and signs of age consistent with careful use. The glass shades are in very good condition, free from cracks or major chips, with light wear appropriate for a piece of this age. The overall impression is one of well-preserved authenticity, retaining its original parts and finish.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was one of Sweden’s most influential lighting designers. His designs from the 1940s through the 1960s bridged functionalist principles with a distinctly Scandinavian sense of warmth and domesticity. ASEA, one of Sweden’s major lighting and electrical manufacturers, was known for high-quality production and technical innovation, which contributed to the enduring reputation of their lighting fixtures.
This lamp reflects the mid-century Scandinavian aesthetic, where simplicity, function, and subtle decorative elements coexist harmoniously. It would have originally been used in residential interiors, providing both practical illumination and a decorative focal point. The combination of brass and opal glass is typical of the period, designed to create a soft, glare-free light that enhances the atmosphere of a room.
