Hans Bergström ceiling lamps
This rare pair of flush mount ceiling lamps was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the mid-20th century. The lamps are representative of Swedish Modern lighting design, where carefully balanced proportions, high-quality materials, and a strong focus on light diffusion were central design concerns.
Each lamp consists of a mouth-blown opaline glass shade with a softly rounded, slightly compressed spherical form. The glass is white and opaque, with a smooth surface that diffuses light evenly and reduces glare. When illuminated, the glass emits a warm, gentle glow with subtle tonal depth, while unlit it appears clean and neutral. The shade is held in place by a brass structure, including a circular ceiling canopy and slender horizontal brass rods that secure the glass. These details introduce a precise, architectural contrast to the organic glass form.
The brass components have a warm golden tone and a finely finished surface, characteristic of Ateljé Lyktan’s production quality during this period. The construction is both robust and visually light, allowing the lamps to sit close to the ceiling without appearing heavy. This type of flush mount was particularly suited to interiors with lower ceiling heights, while still providing a generous and atmospheric light output.
Hans Bergström was one of the most important figures in Swedish lighting design and the founder of Ateljé Lyktan. His work is known for its emphasis on light quality, innovative use of materials, and a modern yet human approach to form. During the mid-century period, Bergström developed many ceiling and pendant lamps that have since become defining examples of Swedish Modern lighting, combining functional clarity with refined detailing.
The pair is in excellent condition, with the opaline glass shades intact and free from cracks or chips. The brass elements show only minor signs of use consistent with age, such as light surface wear, while retaining their original finish and structural integrity.
Each lamp measures approximately 27 cm in diameter and 27 cm in height, corresponding to about 10.6 inches in diameter and 10.6 inches in height.
