Hans Bergström ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1950s. The lamp is constructed with a horizontal teak beam that supports six individual light points, each articulated through brass fittings and suspended from a rectangular brass ceiling canopy via slender cords. The overall composition is distinctly linear and architectural, balancing natural materials with precise metal detailing.
The teak structure shows a warm reddish-brown tone with visible grain, providing a strong visual contrast to the matte golden brass components. Each light source is enclosed by an original cylindrical cane shade, tightly woven in a fine basket pattern. The cane material filters the light effectively, producing a soft, warm glow while allowing a subtle pattern of light and shadow to emerge when illuminated. The brass lamp holders sit centrally within each shade and are connected to the teak beam by slim brass arms, emphasizing the horizontal rhythm of the design.
Hans Bergström was a key figure in Swedish lighting design and the founder of Ateljé Lyktan. His work is known for combining functional lighting solutions with refined material choices, often incorporating wood, brass, and textile or natural fiber shades. During the post-war period, Bergström’s designs played an important role in shaping Scandinavian modern lighting, favoring warm, atmospheric illumination over purely technical light output.
Ateljé Lyktan, established in Åhus in 1934, became one of Sweden’s most influential lighting manufacturers under Bergström’s direction. The company gained international recognition for its high-quality craftsmanship and its ability to merge modernist principles with traditional materials, resulting in lamps that were both innovative and enduring.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with visible signs of use consistent with age. The brass surfaces show patina and surface wear, while the teak displays minor marks and tonal variation. The original cane shades show some minor damages and stains, typical for organic materials of this period, and these details contribute to the authenticity of the piece.
