Hans Bergström ceiling lamp
This very rare ceiling lamp, model 136, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden during the 1940s. The fixture is executed in brass with eight opaline glass shades, creating a multi-armed structure with a strong architectural presence while still maintaining an airy, balanced overall profile.
The construction is based around a central ceiling canopy in brass from which eight arms extend radially. Each arm is formed from bent tubular brass, creating a rhythmic geometry with subtle directional changes before terminating in the lamp holders. The glass shades are made in opaline glass with a softly rounded, slightly tapered body and an open lower edge, distributing light both downward and outward. Each shade is secured at the neck with small brass fittings, adding a precise mechanical detail and emphasizing the relationship between metal and glass.
Hans Bergström is considered a key figure in Swedish lighting design of the mid-20th century, known for combining functional engineering with refined decorative proportions. His work often features warm brass surfaces and carefully proportioned glass components, aiming to produce a soft and controlled atmosphere rather than direct glare, which became a defining characteristic of Scandinavian lighting during this period.
Ateljé Lyktan, based in Åhus, developed into one of Sweden’s most important lighting producers during the 20th century and became particularly respected for its collaboration with designers who helped shape Swedish modern lighting. Production from the 1940s is relatively scarce compared to later decades, and models from this period often show a strong transition between classical craftsmanship and the emerging modernist language of the postwar era.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use. The brass surfaces show natural patina and minor marks consistent with decades of handling and environmental exposure, which is typical for untreated or lightly finished brass components from the period.
Dimensions: 80 cm diameter and 33 cm height (31.5 in diameter and 13.0 in height).
