Hans Bergström ceiling lamps

Information

This very rare ceiling lamp or flush mount was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. It is a striking example of Bergström’s refined approach to mid-century Scandinavian lighting, merging functional illumination with sculptural composition and material elegance.

The lamp is constructed from solid brass and opaline glass, featuring a star-like configuration in its layout. At the core is a circular brass mounting plate from which five gently curved brass arms radiate symmetrically. Each arm terminates in a cylindrical opaline glass shade. These shades are softly rounded and taper subtly toward the top, creating a fluid, organic silhouette that contrasts with the geometric clarity of the brass structure. The overall form is low and expansive, suitable for both ceiling and flush-mount installations.

The materials are selected for both aesthetic and functional qualities. The brass has a warm golden tone that has developed a light, natural patina over time, adding visual depth and enhancing the vintage character of the lamp. The opaline glass, with its milky white surface, provides even light diffusion and conceals the bulb while softly illuminating the space. This combination of rich brass and softly glowing glass is a hallmark of Bergström’s mid-century work, emphasizing balance between material contrast and atmospheric lighting.

Condition is excellent. The brass arms and mounting plate show minimal signs of wear, with subtle patina consistent with age that underscores the authenticity of the piece. The opaline glass shades are intact and free of chips, cracks, or discoloration. All elements are well-preserved and retain their original structural and aesthetic integrity.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was one of the key figures in Swedish lighting design. As founder of Ateljé Lyktan, he championed designs that were both technically innovative and visually refined. This lamp exemplifies his design philosophy, combining clean modernist lines with expressive use of form and material.

The lamp measures 60 cm in diameter (23.6 inches) and 33 cm in height (13 inches), making it suitable for a variety of interior spaces, including living rooms, dining areas, or entry halls where a sculptural yet understated lighting fixture is desired. It is a rare and collectable example of Scandinavian modern lighting design from one of its most influential creators.
