Edvard Kindt-Larsen

Edvard Kindt-Larsen (1901–1982) was a Danish architect and furniture designer whose work reflects the refined restraint and material sensitivity associated with Danish modernism. Working closely with his wife and design partner Tove Kindt-Larsen, he developed furniture and interiors distinguished by clarity of form, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for natural materials.

Biography
Kindt-Larsen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and later taught at the Royal Danish Academy’s School of Furniture. Together with Tove Kindt-Larsen, he established a design studio that became known for its cohesive approach to interiors and furnishings.

Their work is characterised by elegant proportions, subtle detailing, and an emphasis on comfort and usability. Drawing on traditional cabinetmaking techniques, they worked primarily in teak, oak, and other fine woods, often incorporating woven materials such as cane and rattan to introduce texture and lightness.

Among their most recognised designs are lounge chairs and seating furniture that combine sculptural clarity with inviting comfort. Their work frequently balances modernist simplicity with organic warmth, creating pieces suited to both private homes and public interiors.

The Kindt-Larsens also contributed to exhibition design and interior commissions, helping shape the visual language of postwar Danish domestic environments. Their furniture was produced by leading manufacturers including France & Daverkosen (later France & Søn), ensuring wide international distribution.

Through their collaborative practice, Edvard and Tove Kindt-Larsen helped define a humane and material-driven approach to modern design, one that continues to resonate through the enduring appeal of their work.
