Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model A1965, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. Constructed from brass and featuring a white fabric diffuser, the lamp incorporates an adjustable counterweight system that allows the height to be modulated between 85 and 125 cm. This functional mechanism, combined with the lamp’s elegant form, exemplifies Tynell’s distinctive approach to lighting—balancing practicality with decorative refinement.
The shade presents a wide, shallow dome with a gently flaring contour and a soft peak at the top, creating a fluid, organic silhouette. The brass exterior is perforated with a pattern of small, regularly spaced holes, which allow points of light to filter through when illuminated, producing a shimmering effect reminiscent of a starry sky. The underside includes a recessed diffuser made from taut fabric that conceals the light source and softens the downward illumination to reduce glare.
Suspension is managed by a cord and a slender brass torpedo-shaped counterweight that moves vertically via a pulley system integrated into the ceiling canopy. This detail not only provides practical height adjustment but also contributes visually to the lamp’s refined and harmonious profile.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a master of mid-century Finnish lighting design, known for elevating lighting fixtures to decorative art objects. His work frequently combined perforated metal, quality materials, and indirect lighting techniques. As a co-founder of Taito Oy in 1918, he shaped the company’s output for several decades, with his lamps featured widely in both public and private interiors. Tynell’s designs played a significant role in defining the Scandinavian modern aesthetic of the mid-20th century.
This lamp is in good vintage condition, exhibiting age-appropriate patina on the brass and minor surface irregularities.
