Anna-Lisa Thomson vase
This rare floor vase was designed by Anna-Lisa Thomson and produced by Upsala Ekeby in Sweden during the 1950s. Crafted in white-glazed stoneware, the vase features an elegant ovoid shape that gently tapers toward both the base and the mouth. Its surface is richly decorated with low-relief marine and botanical motifs—starfish, seaweed, and shells—arranged rhythmically to create a dynamic interplay of texture and shadow.
The soft ivory-white glaze, marked by a subtle crackle pattern, highlights the tactile quality of the sculpted details while reflecting Scandinavian modernism’s preference for restrained, honest material expression. Anna-Lisa Thomson (1905–1952), educated at Stockholm’s School of Industrial Arts, was a pioneering Swedish ceramicist whose organic yet sculptural style remains highly regarded. Her work at Upsala Ekeby notably combined artistic sensitivity with functional design.
Produced by Upsala Ekeby, a key player in 20th-century Swedish ceramics, this vase embodies the firm’s commitment to blending craftsmanship with modern decorative art. The piece is in good vintage condition, showing minor age-related wear and visible crazing but no cracks or repairs. The relief motifs remain crisp, maintaining the vase’s strong visual impact.
