Anna-Lisa Thomson vase
This rare ceramic vase was designed by Anna-Lisa Thomson and produced by Upsala Ekeby in Sweden during the 1950s. It exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century studio ceramics through its sculptural relief surface and matte ivory-white glaze. Thomson’s work is distinguished by combining organic motifs with stylized modernist forms, evident in this vase’s robust ovoid shape and decorative program.
The vase features a narrow, slightly flared neck and a gently tapering body. Its surface is richly textured with applied relief decoration depicting underwater scenes: stylized fish, sea stars, aquatic plants, and swirling water currents wrap fluidly around the vessel. The moderately raised relief adds both visual depth and tactile interest to the smooth ceramic form.
The glaze is an unglossed ivory-white with fine craquelure consistent with low-temperature firing and age. Minor discoloration, small pits, and wear appear on the rim and base. The foot ring is unglazed, revealing the reddish-brown earthenware body beneath.
Anna-Lisa Thomson (1905–1952), a leading ceramic artist at Upsala Ekeby, is celebrated for her nature-inspired, symbolic relief designs. Her work remains highly regarded for its artistic strength and distinctive visual identity.
Dimensions are 23 cm in diameter and 31 cm in height (approximately 9.1 x 12.2 inches). The vase is in good vintage condition, showing typical signs of age and use.
