Information

This large ceramic floor vase, model “Paprika” was designed in 1949 by Anna-Lisa Thomson and produced by Upsala Ekeby in Sweden during the 1950s. The form exhibits a teardrop or ovoid shape, tapering gently toward the top with a narrow, slightly flared opening. The surface features a carved, stylized feather or leaf motif extending vertically from the base to the shoulder of the vase. The carved elements are highlighted in a light beige or off-white glaze, contrasting against the deep, matte brown background that dominates the upper portion of the vessel. The combination creates a strong vertical rhythm and tactile surface variation. The interior of the vase is glazed in a lighter tone, visible around the lip.

The condition is good vintage, with small signs of use and age-appropriate patina, including subtle wear consistent with careful handling and display. There are no visible cracks or structural damage.

Anna-Lisa Thomson (1905–1952) was a prominent Swedish ceramist and painter, known for her organic forms and textural surface treatments. She was one of the leading designers at Upsala Ekeby, a ceramics manufacturer that became synonymous with Swedish modernist design in the mid-20th century. Her works often drew inspiration from nature and were characterized by a balance between sculptural presence and functional utility.

Upsala Ekeby, founded in 1886 in Uppsala, Sweden, played a significant role in shaping Scandinavian ceramics throughout the 20th century. The company collaborated with several influential designers and was recognized for its innovative glazes, textures, and artistic ambition. The Paprika model exemplifies the mid-century Scandinavian design ethos, blending decorative restraint with a strong sense of form and surface articulation.

The dimensions of the vase are 52.5 centimeters in height and 20 centimeters in diameter, which converts to approximately 20.7 inches high and 7.9 inches in diameter.
