Information

This rare pair of wall lamps, produced in the 1950s by Boréns in Sweden, exemplifies the decorative yet functional aesthetic of mid-century Scandinavian lighting. Though the designer remains unknown, the craftsmanship and detailing reflect the high production standards typical of Boréns during the postwar period.

Constructed entirely from polished brass, each lamp features a bell-shaped shade with scalloped edges, subtly evoking the form of a flower. The shades are perforated with an array of evenly spaced small holes, which serve both a functional and decorative purpose—allowing light to diffuse through and around the lamp, casting intricate shadow patterns on adjacent surfaces while reducing direct glare. When illuminated, the effect is both atmospheric and elegant.

The shades are supported by gently curved brass arms that project gracefully from circular wall plates. The curvature of the arms not only lends structural stability but also adds a fluid, sculptural dimension to the overall design. The polished brass has aged naturally over time, acquiring a soft patina that enhances the material’s depth and historic character without compromising the reflective quality of the surface.

The lamps measure 13 cm in width, 25 cm in height, and 27 cm in depth (approximately 5.1 by 9.8 by 10.6 inches), giving them a compact yet visually engaging presence suitable for flanking mirrors, headboards, or hallway features. Both lamps remain in excellent vintage condition, showing minor signs of patina consistent with age. They retain their original manufacturer’s labels, confirming their authenticity and production origin.

Boréns, based in the Swedish city of Borås, was known throughout the mid-20th century for producing high-quality lighting for both domestic and public interiors. The company often collaborated with leading designers and maintained a focus on craftsmanship and material refinement. Though this particular model is of anonymous authorship, it reflects the studio’s aesthetic language—characterized by soft curves, pierced detailing, and warm metal finishes.

These wall lamps stand as refined examples of 1950s Swedish lighting, blending floral form, subtle ornamentation, and material richness into a unified and timeless design.
