Information

This is a rare set of four dining chairs, model “Captain” designed by Erik Buck and produced by Ørum Møbelsnedkeri in Denmark during the 1960s. These chairs are characteristic of the Danish modern era, embodying a combination of sculptural form and ergonomic comfort, executed with refined cabinetmaking skills.

The chairs are crafted from solid teak, displaying a warm reddish-brown hue with expressive wood grain patterns. The frame construction is lean and elegantly proportioned, with gently tapering legs and contoured back supports that offer both structural integrity and aesthetic flow. The seat and backrest are upholstered in original black imitation leather, maintaining the period-correct look and feel while providing functional durability. The backrest is slightly curved for lumbar support and affixed to the vertical back posts in a way that enhances both visual lightness and comfort.

The angled rear legs and subtly reclined seat posture contribute to a relaxed yet upright seating experience, typical of Erik Buck’s focus on ergonomics. The cross-stretchers beneath the seat follow a geometric contour that not only stabilizes the frame but also adds a dynamic sculptural element when viewed from the side.

Erik Buck (1923–1982) was a Danish designer known for his streamlined and functional designs, often realized in teak and rosewood. While many of his creations were produced by Oddense Maskinsnedkeri, the “Captain” chair is among his lesser-known yet distinctive designs, manufactured by Ørum Møbelsnedkeri, a respected Danish workshop noted for quality craftsmanship.

The set is in good vintage condition, with small signs of age and use such as slight creasing and wear on the imitation leather, and minor surface marks to the teak frames. The chairs remain structurally sound and retain their original finish and upholstery.

Each chair measures 50 cm in width, 53 cm in depth, and 79.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm. These dimensions correspond approximately to 19.7 inches wide, 20.9 inches deep, 31.3 inches high, and a seat height of 17.3 inches.
