Information

This very rare mid-century ceiling lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden during the 1950s. It showcases Bergström’s skill in combining technical function with sculptural clarity, exemplifying the refined materiality and geometric elegance characteristic of Scandinavian lighting design from this period.

The entire fixture is made from brass, featuring a warm, polished golden tone. It comprises four elongated shades with a tapering silhouette that slightly flares toward their bases, evoking stylized bottle forms. These shades are suspended from a central structure via gracefully curved brass arms arranged in a symmetrical V-shaped configuration. This architectural support adds rhythm and balance, enhancing both the sculptural appeal and functional integrity of the lamp.

Each shade is crowned with a perforated top section that serves for heat ventilation and emits delicate points of light when illuminated, creating a subtle decorative effect. The interiors of the shades are designed to direct light downward, providing focused illumination well suited for dining areas or work surfaces. The ceiling mount is a minimalist rectangular brass plate that discreetly anchors the fixture.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996), founder of Ateljé Lyktan in 1934, was a pivotal figure in Swedish lighting design. His work is renowned for architectural clarity, inventive form, and masterful use of materials. Bergström’s designs helped define modern Swedish lighting by blending functionalism with elegance and high craftsmanship. This lamp embodies the harmony of industrial production and artistic vision central to his legacy.

The lamp remains in very good original condition, displaying light patina and minor surface marks consistent with its age. The brass retains a soft luster with minimal oxidation. All structural and electrical components are intact and fully operational.

Dimensions are 73.5 cm wide, 10.5 cm deep, and 67 cm high, approximately 28.9 inches wide, 4.1 inches deep, and 26.4 inches high.
