Hans Bergström ceiling lamp
Ceiling lamp model 98 designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. This is an early and very rare example from Bergström’s formative period, when his work combined sculptural metalwork with carefully controlled light diffusion, anticipating many of the principles that later defined Scandinavian modern lighting.
The lamp is constructed in brass with opaline glass shades and lacquered metal elements. The structure consists of three curved arms radiating from a central vertical stem, each supporting an opaline glass diffuser. Surrounding each glass shade is a hammered metal reflector with softly undulating contours, creating a layered, organic silhouette. Small decorative star-shaped brass details are applied to the reflector plates, adding a subtle ornamental note characteristic of Bergström’s early designs.
The materials display a warm palette of golden brass, creamy white opaline glass, and softly green lacquered metal. When illuminated, the opaline glass produces a diffused, warm light, while the hammered metal diffusors reflect and soften the glow, creating an atmospheric and evenly distributed illumination. The lamp works both as a functional light source and as a sculptural ceiling piece.
The condition is good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use consistent with its period. These include light surface wear and patina to the brass components and small marks to the lacquered surfaces, all of which contribute to the authentic character of the piece without affecting its structural integrity or function.
Hans Bergström was one of the most influential Swedish lighting designers of the mid-20th century and a key figure in shaping Scandinavian lighting aesthetics. As the founder and artistic director of Ateljé Lyktan, he introduced innovative approaches to glare-free lighting, material refinement, and expressive form. Model 98 reflects an early phase of his work, where decorative elements and craftsmanship played a prominent role before his later, more strictly functionalist designs.
