Information

This rare ceiling lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. It is a representative work of Scandinavian mid-century lighting design, marked by a blend of decorative detail and functional minimalism. The fixture consists of three brass pendants suspended from a central ceiling canopy via a custom three-arm drop. The brass shades are perforated with a regular grid of small circular holes, creating a soft constellation of light when illuminated.

Each conical shade tapers gently from the base to the neck, forming a classic, unobtrusive silhouette with subtle sculptural quality. The brass surface has aged naturally, developing a rich patina consistent with the lamp’s age. When lit, the perforations diffuse a constellation-like glow, providing both direct downward illumination and an atmospheric ambient effect through the pinholes. The lamp’s composition achieves a balanced vertical rhythm, suspended by slender cords from a symmetrical three-branch brass stem.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was one of Sweden’s leading lighting designers in the mid-20th century. As founder and chief designer at Ateljé Lyktan from the 1930s into the 1950s, Bergström pioneered new approaches to domestic lighting using brass, glass, and perforated metal. His work explored the interplay of shadow and form, often combining restrained geometries with innovative light diffusion techniques. This model is emblematic of his early post-functional period, marrying decorative elegance with technical clarity.

The lamp remains in good vintage condition with signs of wear and surface patina throughout, especially on the brass shades and fixture arms. These marks are consistent with age and original material use, contributing to the authenticity and historical value of the piece.
