Paavo Tynell wall lamps
This pair of wall lamps was designed by Finnish lighting pioneer Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland. Tynell, often referred to as “the man who illuminated Finland”, was a foundational figure in Nordic lighting design, known for his refined brass work and imaginative use of perforations and diffused light. Taito Oy was the primary manufacturer of his work during the 1930s through the 1950s, producing many of his most collectible and artistically accomplished designs.
Each lamp is constructed entirely in brass and features a flared conical shade attached to a stepped circular wall mount. The shades are elegantly tapered, opening broadly at the top, and display a surface pattern of small, precision-drilled perforations. These perforations are distributed in subtle constellations across the brass surface, enabling a poetic scattering of light to filter through when the lamps are lit. This light effect, combined with the indirect glow reflected on the wall, demonstrates Tynell’s mastery in combining function with atmospheric softness.
The wall plates are composed of concentric rings that radiate outward from the mounting point, contributing a strong geometric base to balance the organic flow of the shades. The connecting arms feature a stepped cylindrical form with a conical tip, a detail that is typical of Tynell’s attention to mechanical and ornamental harmony.
The brass surfaces have developed a rich natural patina over time, consistent with the age of the lamps, while the condition remains excellent. There are no significant losses or deformations, and the overall structural integrity and aesthetic presence are well preserved.
Each lamp measures 15.5 cm in width, 18 cm in depth, and 29 cm in height, which corresponds approximately to 6.1 inches wide, 7.1 inches deep, and 11.4 inches tall.
