Information

This rare ceiling lamp, model 9060/10102, was designed by Finnish lighting pioneer Paavo Tynell and produced by Arnold Wiigs Fabrikker in Norway between 1950 and 1952. Crafted from solid brass, the fixture features a wide, shallow conical shade adorned with a finely perforated pattern. The evenly spaced small holes across the surface allow light to filter through softly, creating a starry-sky effect when illuminated. The interior of the shade is coated in white lacquer to enhance light reflection and diffusion.

The lamp is supported by two slender brass rods that converge in a looped formation, connected to a cylindrical brass ceiling cup. At the bottom center of the shade, a secondary diffuser composed of concentric circular elements provides glare-free illumination, illustrating Tynell’s commitment to combining function with decorative lighting. This design element reflects his signature style, merging elegance with practical considerations.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a seminal Nordic lighting designer renowned for his sophisticated use of perforated brass and glass. Trained as a metalworker, he co-founded Taito Oy in Finland, where he developed many iconic lighting designs. Tynell’s work often incorporates organic motifs and soft indirect light to create poetic and atmospheric interiors. While primarily associated with Finnish production, some of his designs were licensed for manufacture in other Nordic countries, including Norway.

Arnold Wiigs Fabrikker, based in Halden, Norway, was active in producing decorative and functional metalwork and lighting during the mid-20th century. Their collaboration with Tynell represents a notable contribution to high-quality Scandinavian modern design in the postwar period.

The lamp is in good vintage condition, exhibiting age-appropriate wear on the brass surface, including minor patina and surface marks consistent with use.

Dimensions measure 56 cm in diameter and 65 cm in height (approximately 22 by 25.6 inches).
