Information

This is a rare and early ceiling lamp, model 9029/6, designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. The lamp exemplifies the poetic and handcrafted character that defines Tynell’s lighting work, blending traditional materials with a sculptural, nature-inspired aesthetic typical of mid-century Scandinavian modernism.

The fixture is composed primarily of brass with six opaline glass shades, shaped like tulip blossoms, supported by organically branching brass arms. The brass structure is highly ornamental, incorporating delicately worked floral and foliate motifs, including filigree wire flowers and finely perforated metal leaves. These decorative elements are arranged in a radial composition around the central column and are both structurally integrated and visually expressive. The brass surfaces display a warm natural patina, consistent with age and authentic to its original finish.

The opaline glass shades emit a diffused, soft light and are gently cradled in upward-arching brass holders. When lit, the lamp presents a layered glow, enhancing both the glass and the metallic detailing, contributing to the atmospheric lighting for which Tynell is known. The central stem extends into a flared ceiling canopy, visually grounding the fixture while maintaining its upwardly blooming silhouette.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of Finland’s most celebrated lighting designers. A co-founder of Taito Oy in 1918, he collaborated closely with Finnish architects, including Alvar Aalto, and was known for his inventive use of brass, perforation techniques, and floral themes in lighting. Tynell’s lamps often blur the line between function and ornamentation, drawing influence from both Scandinavian nature and early modernist design.

Taito Oy was a pioneering Finnish lighting company and the original manufacturer of many of Tynell’s most iconic designs. Their output during the mid-20th century is now internationally recognized for its craftsmanship and decorative modernism.

This example is in good vintage condition, with signs of use and aged patina across the brass components, especially around the floral elements and central canopy. The condition of the glass shades is intact, showing no visible chips or cracks.

The dimensions are approximately 60 cm in diameter and 83 cm in height, which corresponds to 23.6 inches in diameter and 32.7 inches in height.
