Percival Lafer easy chairs

This rare pair of easy chairs was designed by Brazilian modernist Percival Lafer in the 1970s and produced by Lafer MP, one of the most innovative furniture manufacturers in mid-century Brazil. Lafer is known for combining modernist principles with comfort-focused engineering, as well as for his inventive use of native Brazilian hardwoods and integrated upholstery systems.

These chairs are constructed with a visible structural framework in dark-stained rosewood, which offers contrast and support to the supple tan leather upholstery. The leather is suspended and attached to the wooden structure using thick saddle leather straps, secured with solid rosewood knobs and metal fittings. This construction method highlights Lafer’s engineering-driven design philosophy, where the means of attachment becomes an intentional part of the visual composition.

The cushioning is generously dimensioned and features rounded contours with a prominent bolster at the top of the backrest for additional comfort. The seats and armrests are integrated in a continuous upholstered module that sits snugly within the structural wood frame. The overall silhouette is bold and graphic, with a combination of horizontal and vertical elements softened by the upholstery’s rounded edges.

Produced by Lafer MP in Brazil, this pair reflects the distinctive characteristics of Brazilian mid-century design—rich hardwoods, innovative joinery, and sculptural comfort. The matching sofa from the same series is also available, further indicating the modular and system-based thinking behind this furniture line.

These chairs are in good vintage condition, showing signs of usage and attractive patina. The leather surfaces display wear consistent with age but remain intact, while the rosewood frames show minimal structural wear and retain their deep finish. The chrome fasteners and fittings show light oxidation, typical for original hardware of this period.
