Information

The very rare ceiling lamp, model 125/12, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, is a masterful example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting. Combining refined craftsmanship, natural materials, and architectural balance, this piece highlights Bergström’s talent for designing ambient, sculptural lighting with a human touch.

This chandelier-style ceiling lamp features a large circular frame crafted from solid brass, with a diameter of 90 cm. The brass has aged beautifully, developing a rich patina that softens its original golden luster, adding depth and character to the overall presentation. The frame supports twelve cane-woven shades arranged in a symmetrical perimeter. The wide, evenly spaced arrangement allows for even light distribution, making this a highly functional fixture as well as a decorative centerpiece.

Each shade is constructed from delicately handwoven cane, designed to diffuse light in a warm, soft manner. The use of cane not only reinforces the natural material palette that is characteristic of Scandinavian design but also introduces a tactile and artisanal element. The shades retain their original structure and shape, with only slight imperfections and minor wear, an exceptional condition given the fragility of the material and the age of the piece.

The overall design of the 125/12 is striking yet harmonious. The repetition of conical cane shades creates visual rhythm and structure, while the circular brass armature gives the fixture a unified, sculptural presence. When illuminated, the interplay of cane texture and filtered light creates a glowing, ambient effect that emphasizes the lamp’s function as both a practical light source and a design statement.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996), the founder of Ateljé Lyktan, was instrumental in shaping Swedish lighting design during the mid-20th century. Known for his sensitive handling of materials such as wood, fabric, and metal, he sought to create lighting that was both atmospheric and aesthetically restrained. This model exemplifies that vision—balancing elegance, warmth, and craftsmanship.

Condition:
Good vintage condition overall. The brass frame shows patination typical of its age. The cane shades are very well preserved with only minor irregularities, reflecting the care taken in its use and preservation.
