Hans Bergström ceiling lamp
This exceptionally rare ceiling lamp, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, is a significant example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. Executed during the height of Bergström’s creative output in the mid-20th century, the lamp exhibits a sophisticated balance of form, function, and artisanal craftsmanship. Its structure is composed of a circular brass frame, meticulously constructed to support twelve evenly spaced opaline glass shades.
Each glass shade is shaped like an elongated droplet, narrowing at the base and flaring gently at the top. The opaline surface subtly diffuses light, producing a warm, ambient glow that softens the environment and minimizes glare. This droplet form, both sculptural and delicate, contributes to the chandelier’s lightness and rhythm, evoking a sense of suspended motion while maintaining a strong architectural presence.
The brass frame is finished with a naturally aged patina, developed over decades, which lends depth and character to the overall composition. The design is both symmetrical and organic, with the gently curved glass elements radiating outward from the central structure in a precise yet expressive manner. The result is a ceiling fixture that functions as both a source of light and a sculptural centerpiece.
Hans Bergström, co-founder of Ateljé Lyktan in 1934, was a foundational figure in Swedish lighting design, known for merging traditional materials with modernist principles. His work consistently emphasized the interplay between functional illumination and aesthetic form. Under his direction, Ateljé Lyktan became a leader in handcrafted, architecturally sensitive lighting solutions, serving both public and domestic spaces across Scandinavia and internationally.
This ceiling lamp remains in excellent vintage condition. The opaline glass shades are intact, free from chips or cracks, and the brass frame retains its structural integrity and visual richness. The fixture is a rare and well-preserved example of Bergström’s mature work, combining material elegance with a nuanced understanding of light, scale, and spatial composition.
