Hans Bergström ceiling lamp

Information

This rare ceiling lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1950s. It is a quintessential example of Scandinavian mid-century lighting, merging soft geometric forms with refined material use and decorative detailing. The lamp features a large, shallow opaline glass diffuser shaped in a wide, conical form. Beneath this opaline glass, a pierced brass shade with a pattern of repeated plus-sign cutouts acts as a secondary diffuser, both concealing the bulb and contributing to the ambient light effect.

The structural components are composed of patinated brass, including the ceiling cup and central stem, which suspend the light fixture in a poised, vertical configuration. The opaline glass is warm white in tone and softly translucent, emitting diffused, even light both upward and downward when illuminated. The perforated brass inner shade casts patterned shadows, giving the fixture a layered lighting dynamic that enhances visual interest when viewed from below.

The dimensions of the piece are 52 centimeters in diameter (20.5 inches) and 65 centimeters in height (25.6 inches). The condition is excellent for its age, with slight natural patina to the brass and minimal wear to the glass surface. The glass remains intact and evenly translucent, while the brass cut-out diffuser maintains its structural integrity and luster.

Hans Bergström, founder of Ateljé Lyktan, played a central role in shaping postwar Swedish lighting. His work often featured combinations of natural and industrial materials, carefully resolved proportions, and a focus on atmospheric lighting. This ceiling lamp exemplifies those priorities through its integration of opaline glass, pierced brass, and soft, ambient light projection. Ateljé Lyktan’s early production under Bergström is considered highly collectible for its unique blend of artisanal sensibility and functional modernist design.
