Information

This ceiling lamp, often referred to as a “UFO” model, was designed by Swedish architect and lighting designer Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden. The lamp dates from the mid-20th century and is characteristic of Bergström’s sculptural yet functional approach to lighting. Executed in brass and opaline glass, the design embodies the refined material palette and balanced proportions that define Scandinavian modernism.

The lamp features a broad, shallow dome-shaped shade in satin opaline glass that diffuses light evenly, casting a soft, ambient glow. The glass is framed and suspended by a minimal brass structure, which contributes both structural support and a warm tonal contrast to the cooler tone of the glass. The form resembles the flattened profile of a disc or UFO—an allusion reflected in its commonly used nickname.

Hans Bergström was one of Sweden’s foremost lighting designers and a co-founder of Ateljé Lyktan. He was instrumental in introducing modernist principles into Swedish lighting design, and although more widely recognized for his work with Ateljé Lyktan, he also designed select pieces for ASEA. These designs often combine architectural clarity with the craftsmanship typical of Scandinavian design in the postwar period.

The lamp is in excellent condition, with original opaline glass and brass elements preserved without significant blemish or corrosion. The suspension includes a matching brass ceiling canopy.

The dimensions of the lamp are 49 cm in diameter and 30 cm in fixture height, with a total overall hanging height of 127 cm. These measurements convert approximately to 19.29 inches in diameter, 11.81 inches in height, and 50 inches in overall drop length.
