Hans Bergström ceiling lamp
This very rare ceiling lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1950s. The lamp exemplifies Bergström’s distinctive approach to Scandinavian modern lighting, combining elegant craftsmanship with natural materials and thoughtful proportions. Suspended from a rectangular brass ceiling canopy, the fixture features a geometric composition of horizontal teak beams and cylindrical brass lamp holders. The overall design is both architectural and warm, reflecting mid-century modern ideals.
The lampshades are composed of finely woven natural cane in a honey-toned finish. The cylindrical shades exhibit a warm, organic texture that contrasts subtly with the refined, golden surfaces of the brass fittings. The wooden structural elements are crafted from solid teak, with a rich, deep grain that provides a harmonious counterbalance to the brass components. The overall shape of the lamp is rectilinear, with the six shades evenly distributed along two horizontal teak arms. When illuminated, the perforated cane shades diffuse the light warmly, creating a soft and inviting ambiance.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was one of Sweden’s leading lighting designers and the founder of Ateljé Lyktan in 1934. His designs are characterized by a combination of technical precision and a poetic approach to form and material. Bergström played a critical role in introducing modern lighting to the Swedish market, blending international modernist principles with a distinctly Scandinavian sense of warmth and human scale. Ateljé Lyktan, under his leadership, became a prominent producer of innovative lighting designs, many of which are now considered classics of mid-century Scandinavian design.
The condition of this ceiling lamp is excellent, showing minimal wear and preserving the original finish on both the wood and brass. The cane shades are intact and well-preserved, demonstrating careful previous ownership. The lamp remains fully functional and has been professionally rewired for safe contemporary use.
The overall dimensions are 80 cm in length, 35.5 cm in width, and 120 cm in height, which corresponds approximately to 31.5 inches in length, 14 inches in width, and 47.2 inches in height. Its generous scale and linear format make it particularly suitable for placement above a dining table or in a spacious living area where it can serve as both a lighting source and a sculptural focal point.
