Information
A rare and early ceiling lamp, model 16, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. Combining brass, glass, and newly fitted lampshades, the chandelier is a refined example of Swedish Modern lighting, characterized by its graceful proportions, flowing lines, and carefully balanced composition.

The chandelier features six elegantly curved arms arranged radially around a central vertical stem. Each arm extends outward in a sweeping curve before turning upward to support a light source. The arms have a dark, naturally aged surface that contrasts with the warmer brass details and the white fabric shades. Their repeated curves create a rhythmic silhouette, giving the chandelier a sense of movement while maintaining a balanced overall appearance.

At the center of the composition is a spherical glass element with a textured, bubble-like appearance. The transparent glass contains numerous small air bubbles and irregularities that catch and refract the light, adding depth and visual interest. Positioned beneath the branching arms, the glass sphere serves as a decorative focal point and provides a delicate contrast to the darker metal framework. A cylindrical brass detail above the sphere marks the point where the arms converge around the central stem.

The six newly fitted white lampshades have a gently tapered form, wider at the bottom and narrower at the top. Their simple geometry complements the curved metal arms without competing with the chandelier’s decorative elements. When illuminated, the shades diffuse the light into a warm, soft glow, emphasizing the sculptural arrangement of the arms and the subtle transparency of the central glass sphere.

The chandelier is suspended from a metal chain with a warm-toned cord running through its links. A circular metal ring connects the chain to the central stem, while a shallow, bowl-shaped brass ceiling canopy completes the upper section. The suspension introduces an additional decorative element, visually connecting the chandelier’s curved forms with its vertical arrangement.

Hans Bergström was an important figure in the development of Swedish lighting design during the twentieth century. He founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934, establishing a company that became closely associated with Scandinavian lighting design. His work frequently explored the relationship between materials, decorative form, and the quality of illumination. During the 1940s, his designs often incorporated expressive metalwork, glass details, and softly diffused light, reflecting the decorative yet restrained character of Swedish Modern design.

Model 16 demonstrates these qualities through its combination of curved arms, contrasting materials, and carefully arranged light sources. The chandelier retains a distinctly decorative character while avoiding excessive ornamentation. Its circular arrangement creates a harmonious appearance from different viewpoints, while the central glass sphere adds a distinctive visual accent.

The chandelier is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use. The metal surfaces display a natural patina and subtle variations in tone, particularly on the brass components. The glass sphere retains its textured appearance, and the newly fitted lampshades provide a clean contrast to the aged materials.

Measuring 66 cm in diameter and 83 cm in height, the chandelier has a balanced scale suitable for a dining room, living room, or other interior setting.
