Information

These rare ceiling lamps, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1950s, represent a refined example of Scandinavian mid-century lighting design. The lamps feature sculptural opaline glass shades characterized by softly curved, organic forms that gently flare at the base. This shape enables an even diffusion of light, producing a warm and inviting glow ideal for both residential and commercial interiors. The glass shades are affixed with multiple brass screws, which serve a dual purpose of securing the shade while contributing subtle decorative detail. The fixture hangs from a slender brass rod, whose surface has developed a rich, natural patina, enhancing the piece’s vintage authenticity.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was a pivotal figure in Swedish lighting design, notable for his innovative synthesis of form and function. As the co-founder and artistic director of Ateljé Lyktan, Bergström’s work was instrumental in defining the Scandinavian modernist lighting aesthetic throughout the mid-20th century. His designs are distinguished by elegant simplicity paired with technical innovation, reflecting both aesthetic refinement and practical usability.

Ateljé Lyktan, established in 1934 in Åhus, Sweden, gained early acclaim for its commitment to craftsmanship and pioneering use of materials and techniques. Under Bergström’s leadership, the company became synonymous with high-quality Scandinavian modern lighting, producing pieces that have endured as design classics. The lamps retain good vintage condition with wear consistent with their age and use. The brass components show a natural patina typical of the period, while the opaline glass shades remain well preserved, maintaining their soft light diffusion.

The dimensions of the lamps are 27 cm in diameter and 160 cm in height (10.6 x 63 inches).
