Hans Bergström ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden during the 1940s. The fixture features three trumpet-shaped brass shades suspended from a central brass ceiling mount. Each shade has a softly flaring conical form that tapers gently toward the top and is pierced with a regular pattern of small perforations, allowing light to diffuse softly and creating both functional illumination and atmospheric warmth. The brass has developed a warm golden patina consistent with its age.
The lamp exemplifies early mid-century Scandinavian lighting design, emphasizing craftsmanship and material quality alongside functional modernist principles. The staggered heights and rhythmic arrangement of the three shades contribute to a dynamic, architectural composition.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996), co-founder of Ateljé Lyktan, was instrumental in shaping Swedish lighting design in the postwar era. His work balanced material sensitivity with innovative forms, blending artisanal techniques with industrial production. Ateljé Lyktan, established in 1934, became a leading producer of handcrafted lighting fixtures that defined Swedish modernism by combining utility with artistic refinement.
This lamp remains in good vintage condition, exhibiting minor surface marks and natural brass aging that enhance its character without affecting structural integrity.
The lamp measures approximately 30 cm in diameter and 130 cm in height (about 11.8 by 51.2 inches).
