Information

This cocoon ceiling lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. It reflects Bergström’s sensitivity to material and form, emphasizing gentle light diffusion and sculptural clarity. The lamp is notable for its organic shape and atmospheric light quality, aligning with the designer’s broader exploration of soft, ambient illumination in mid-century Swedish lighting design.

The lamp’s body is spherical with a smooth, continuous surface made of a fibrous, off-white or cream-colored cocoon material. This material, characteristic of several experimental lighting designs from the 1950s and 1960s, was applied over a structural frame, resulting in a semi-translucent skin that glows warmly when lit. Vertical ribs structure the surface evenly, running from the top ceiling mount to the base, where they converge in a central point. These ribs provide both form and subtle ornamentation, accentuating the lamp’s symmetrical and enclosed shape.

From below, the lamp reveals a radial arrangement of the internal structure, with the ribs forming a central focal point that enhances the visual geometry. The shade’s softly textured surface and gentle coloration contribute to a warm, diffuse light ideal for ambient illumination.

The lamp is in good vintage condition. Minor signs of age are visible on the surface, including light discoloration and small marks, which are consistent with the material properties and its age. These imperfections do not affect the structural integrity or overall presentation of the lamp.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996), founder of Ateljé Lyktan, was instrumental in shaping the direction of Swedish lighting in the mid-20th century. His designs often blended practical innovation with a poetic approach to form and atmosphere. The cocoon lamp embodies his interest in tactile materials and soft sculptural lighting.

The lamp has a diameter of 45 cm (17.7 inches) and a height of 75 cm (29.5 inches), making it well-suited for interior spaces that benefit from both visual softness and a striking, organic form.
