Hans Bergström ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model 40, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. Crafted entirely from brass, the lamp embodies the mid-century Scandinavian design ethos with its restrained yet elegant form.
The fixture comprises three conical brass shades suspended at varying heights from a central brass canopy. Each shade is perforated with a delicate star-like pattern, allowing small points of light to emanate and produce a soft, atmospheric glow when illuminated. Over time, the brass has developed a natural patina, adding depth and historical authenticity to the piece.
Hans Bergström was a key figure in Swedish lighting design, renowned for his ability to merge functionality with sculptural qualities. As co-founder and artistic director of Ateljé Lyktan, Bergström significantly influenced the development of mid-century Swedish lighting, emphasizing the use of high-quality materials such as brass and glass in his work.
The lamp is preserved in well-maintained vintage condition, exhibiting an age-appropriate patina on the brass that enhances its character. The perforated shades contribute a dynamic visual effect, creating an engaging interplay of light and shadow whether the lamp is switched on or off.
Measuring 30 cm in diameter and 116 cm in height (11.8 by 45.7 inches), the lamp offers a sculptural yet functional presence suitable for a variety of interior settings.
