Information

This rare height-adjustable ceiling lamp, attributed to Hans Bergström, was produced by Bergboms in Sweden during the 1950s. It is a prime example of mid-century Scandinavian modern design, reflecting the minimalist yet functional style that characterized the period. The lamp features a wide, disc-shaped shade made from pleated fabric, with a warm golden orange/yellow tone that adds a soft, inviting glow to any space. The fabric is carefully folded to create a structured radial pattern, contributing to the sculptural and dynamic aesthetic of the piece.

The brass structure of the lamp has developed a rich patina over time, enhancing its character and providing a vintage, well-worn appeal. A distinctive feature of the lamp is its conical perforated housing, adorned with star-shaped cutouts. These perforations allow light to pass through, creating a soft, ambient glow that spreads throughout the room. A matching brass ring, with similar perforations, encircles the lower edge of the shade, further diffusing the light in a subtle yet decorative manner.

One of the key design elements of this lamp is its height-adjustable mechanism, which is facilitated by a counterweight system. This system allows the user to easily alter the height of the lamp, providing versatility for different interior settings. The cylindrical brass counterweight, paired with a pulley system, not only contributes to the functionality of the lamp but also balances its aesthetic proportions, making it both a practical and visually striking fixture.

The lamp remains in its original condition, with minor signs of age and use. The brass has naturally developed a patina that adds to its authenticity and charm. The fabric shade is well-preserved, though there are some slight signs of wear and minor discoloration, typical of an item of this age. These imperfections only enhance the lamp’s character, making it a unique and rare piece.

The dimensions of the lamp are as follows: a diameter of 55 cm (21.7 inches) and an adjustable height range from 105 cm (41.3 inches) to 185 cm (72.8 inches). This makes it suitable for a variety of spaces, adding both functional and visual appeal to mid-century modern interiors.
